The biennial SCAR meetings are an opportunity for subsidiary groups to meet and conduct their business. For some groups this provides the time to develop and produce reports for the Delegates Meeting which follows. Business can include, but is not limited to, sub-group progress reports (e.g., Action Groups and Expert Groups), creation and termination of sub-groups, reports of affiliated programmes/projects (e.eg.,  Scientific Research Programmes, partnering programmes), planning for future activities (e.g., Scientific Research Programme Planning groups, workshops, symposia, and conferences), budgeting, and leadership elections, if appropriate.

Under SCAR’s Articles of Association, the Meeting of the Delegates may create subsidiary bodies (the “Subsidiary Bodies”) to undertake certain aspects of the business of SCAR. Specified Subsidiary Bodies are:

• the Science Groups
  • Geosciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
• the Standing Committee on the Antarctic Treaty System (SCATS),
• the Standing Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information (SCAGI),
• the Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management (SCADM),
• the Standing Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences (SC-HASS).

Standing Committees may have unique meeting schedules, and some may choose to meet at alternative times. However, all Science Groups and Standing Committees are required to make formal reports to the biennial Delegates Meeting.

SCAR Business Meetings are closed meetings. SCAR Subsidiary Groups/Committees members will have received a password to enter the closed meeting site. A limited number of non-members are allowed to attend and interested parties can apply for “Observer” status. Participants need to register for the meetings via an online registration form.
